Methodology. The Sovereign Athlete

The
Sovereign
Athlete

Most performance systems are built around the coach, where the expert observes, diagnoses, and prescribes while the athlete executes. This model is efficient and it produces results, but it also creates a fundamental problem that nobody talks about: athletes who are brilliant at following instruction and completely lost when there is no one to follow.

At the highest level of sport, there is always a moment, often the most important moment, where the athlete is completely alone. No coach in the ear, no program to consult, just a decision that needs to be made under pressure, in real time, with everything on the line. That moment does not reward fitness or technical skill, it rewards judgment, and judgment cannot be prescribed. It has to be developed.

Performance is a decision-making problem as much as it is a physical one.

This is the belief at the center of everything I do. The athletes who consistently perform at their ceiling are not necessarily the most talented or the most disciplined, they are the ones who can accurately read their own situation, identify the right intervention, and execute with conviction, on the field and off it. My role is not to have all the answers, but to develop that capacity in the athlete while providing the philosophical framework that keeps them from going off the rails in the process.

This is not for athletes who want to be told what to do, as there are excellent coaches for that and I am not one of them. This is for athletes who sense that something is missing, who perform well in training but inconsistently in competition, who have the physical tools but feel dependent on external conditions being right, and who want to understand themselves as a performance system and take genuine ownership of what happens next.

A sovereign athlete does not need perfect conditions. They create them.

Three layers.
One framework.

Three interconnected layers that together form a complete framework for athlete development, built around the athlete's capacity to lead their own performance rather than depend on someone else to manage it.

01

Performance environment

Every athlete operates within a minimum viable performance environment, a small set of non-negotiables specific to them. Strength maintenance, speed quality, injury trajectory. These stay in place regardless of schedule, travel, or pressure. Below that threshold I intervene, and above it the athlete leads.

02

Performance identity

How an athlete sees themselves shapes every decision they make under pressure. When performance is being blocked by a belief, a conflict, or a story the athlete is telling themselves, I work at that level, not as a sports psychologist, but as someone who has navigated the same terrain.

03

Integrated oversight

Where a situation exceeds what I can address alone, I bring in trusted specialists who operate within the same philosophy rather than parallel to it, so the holistic view never fragments. It just gets deeper.

The advisory
experience

Intake

Deep performance assessment

We start by mapping your full performance environment, physical capacity, injury history, competitive patterns, identity under pressure, and the decisions that are currently limiting you. Nothing is assumed. Everything is understood from the ground up.

Structure

Your minimum viable environment

Together we define the non-negotiables specific to your situation: the physical, structural, and health requirements that stay in place no matter what your season, schedule, or circumstances look like. These become the foundation everything else is built on.

Ongoing

Athlete-led, advisor-guided

Within the framework you lead. You bring the problems, we solve them together. I observe, ask, challenge, and intervene where it matters, while you develop the judgment to read your own situation with increasing clarity and confidence.

When it counts

High-pressure decision support

Selection battles, injury setbacks, competition blocks, identity crises before major events. These are the moments that define careers, and the moments I am most present for. Not to make the decision for you, but to help you make it with full conviction.

Working with Eric changed how I think about myself as an athlete. I stopped waiting for perfect conditions and started creating them.

Eric
Franke

I am Eric Franke, a performance advisor based in Germany and an Olympic silver medallist in bobsleigh. I work at the intersection of physical preparation, decision-making development, and competitive identity, with athletes who are ready to take genuine ownership of their performance.

I know what it costs to perform at the Olympic level because I have done it. I have been in the moments this methodology is built around, the selection battles, the injury setbacks, the pressure of a single run with everything on the line, and I have sat with the weight of all of it as both an athlete and an advisor. That experience is not a credential I display. It is the foundation of how I work.

After my athletic career I moved into performance advisory, developing the methodology that would become The Sovereign Athlete through years of working with elite athletes navigating the same pressures I once faced. That work has taken athletes to World Championships and the Olympic Games, and into the performance environments of German Bundesliga football, producing results that no training program alone could explain.

The methodology transfers completely across sports. Whether the athlete competes on ice, on a pitch, or on a track, the underlying problem is always the same: developing the judgment to perform when it matters most. The sport changes. The human performance problem does not.

I work with a small number of athletes on a private advisory basis, which means the relationship is genuine, the attention is undivided, and the results are taken seriously.

I work with a small number of athletes on a private advisory basis. This is not a coaching subscription or a program template. It is an ongoing relationship built around your specific situation, your performance environment, and the decisions that matter most to your development.

The engagement covers physical preparation strategy, competitive identity work, performance environment design, and integrated specialist coordination where needed. Everything is filtered through the same philosophical framework, so nothing operates in isolation.

If you are performing well below your training ceiling, feeling dependent on conditions being right, or simply ready to take a different kind of ownership over what happens next, I would like to hear from you.
